WINTER TIPS

WINTER TRAVEL

Gone are the days when a Yukon winter journey meant scaling a mountain, traversing a snowy pass and crossing frozen lakes just to retrieve the mail. Our exhilarating wintertime adventures are just a two-hour flight from Vancouver, Kelowna, Calgary, Edmonton, Ottawa or Yellowknife. Flight schedules vary in the winter; please check schedules with Air North and Air Canada. Some businesses operate seasonally in the Yukon; check for months of operation when planning your Yukon winter adventures.

WHAT TO PACK

Winter temperatures can range from above freezing to 40 below. But don’t let that scare you—we have visitors that come for the thrill of 40 below! If you are on a guided adventure, your hosts will provide you with a detailed list of clothing and outer gear to bring or rent.

  • Long-Sleeved Shirts/Pants
  • Long Underwear
  • Wool Sweater/Fibrefill Vest
  • Winter Coat
  • Warm Hat & Gloves
  • Walking Shoes
  • Insulated BooTS

PREVENTING HYPOTHERMIA

Layers are your friend, start with wool or fleece as a bottom layer, and add from there. Caution: too many layers may hinder mobility.

When you drive away in the morning it may feel as though your tires are square. They are! Keep speeds below 50 km/h before they round up.

Drinking alcohol to treat hypothermia will not work, try hot chocolate instead.

Wear a hat. The majority of your body heat is lost through your head. Plus it’s a great fashion statement
