Driving the Alaska Highway in the winter is usually not a problem. Good winter tires are essential as well as an emergency kit in case you break down. Cell phone coverage is sporadic, so dress for the weather in case of a roadside emergency. Whitehorse is kilometre 1,477 of the Alaska Highway.

The Alaska Marine Highway System runs from Bellingham, Washington via Prince Rupert, up the Inside Passage of Alaska to Haines and Skagway, Alaska (two hours driving time from Whitehorse). This spectacular route is travelled winter and summer. Be prepared to plan your visit around the ferry schedule because winter service is variable.
